THE PROJECT

Co-producing Knowledge on Climate Mobilities

In Accra, Dar es Salaam, Freetown, and Monrovia, migrants and the displaced often relocate to informal neighborhoods. Such migration destinations are low-income and lack adequate social services such as housing, amenities, and formal employment. These neighborhoods are often located in low-lying areas and are exposed to environmental risk. These cascading environmental risks can lead to the continual displacement of vulnerable populations.

This participatory research co-produces knowledge of environmental mobility in African cities. Through a methodology developed by project partners, four local community organizations are spearheading data collection in Accra, Dar es Salaam, Freetown, and Monrovia. Based on survey data, focus group discussions, and community voices, we bring to light new evidence on climate mobilities.

Objectives

1) Generate Local Data: develop more comprehensive local data that provides the necessary baseline information for understanding mobility patterns and addressing climate vulnerability in destination areas.

2) Identify the Relevance and Role of Organized Local Community Groups: point to the contributions of local community groups in facilitating mobility.

3) Establish an Action Plan: put in place operational actions that take into consideration current vulnerabilities through the active involvement of local communities in the policy decision-making and planning processes.
